Prices and brands may vary, but I always recommend items I have used, tested, or carefully researched from professional experience.

I generally recommend starting with affordable student-grade materials, though using higher-quality and lightfast materials is certainly an authentic and rewarding experience. For beginners, it’s often less intimidating to work with economical supplies when practicing color mixing, brush control, or other exploratory exercises—without the pressure of cost.

It’s also valuable to observe firsthand how materials with different pigment concentrations behave. Student-grade paints may appear lighter or less saturated, while artist-grade formulations tend to provide stronger coverage, smoother handling, and greater vibrancy.

Understanding these differences builds sensitivity to the medium. You can then decide whether to transition to professional-grade materials for more nuanced results and lasting works.

How to Use This Guide
