Art Supplies & Materials Guide

Purpose of This Page

This page serves as a continuously updated guide to art supplies introduced throughout my lessons. Its purpose is to help you select materials that align with your artistic goals, experience level, and budget.

My goal is to make art accessible to everyone. I include economical options for those just getting started, along with intermediate & professional-grade materials for artists ready to invest in more advanced tools. Prices and brands may vary, but I always recommend items I have used, tested, or carefully researched from professional experience.

I generally recommend starting with affordable student-grade materials, though using higher-quality and lightfast materials is certainly an authentic and rewarding experience. For beginners, it’s often less intimidating to work with economical supplies when practicing color mixing, brush control, or other exploratory exercises—without the pressure of cost.

It’s also valuable to observe firsthand how materials with different pigment concentrations behave. Student-grade paints may appear lighter or less saturated, while artist-grade formulations tend to provide stronger coverage, smoother handling, and greater vibrancy.

Understanding these differences builds sensitivity to the medium. You can then decide whether to transition to professional-grade materials for more nuanced results and lasting works.

How to Use This Guide

Art materials vary widely in quality, handling, and cost—but not all of them depend on skill level. While some tools may suit beginners better than others, many art supplies can be used by artists of any experience once the basic handling is understood.

For that reason, I don’t strictly categorize supplies by level. Instead, items are generally listed from the most affordable or student-grade options at the top to the more advanced or professional-grade materials toward the bottom. This order often aligns naturally with skill level, but not always.

When a specific material is best suited only for experienced users, or not recommended for beginners, you’ll see a note highlighting this next to the item. Otherwise, you can freely explore the options based on your needs, budget, and creative goals.

A Note About Recommendations

Whenever I mention products, my goal is to guide you in understanding what kind of materials are suitable for each process—not to promote specific brands. As lessons advance, I’ll gradually introduce a broader range of supplies for experimentation and professional use.
